Reading Buddies in February:
Snowy Valentine!

On February 9th, we
had a Valentine’s Day theme read-ing buddies at Aspen Hill Library. There were
about sev-en kids in attendance. While the number of kids may not have been as
many as we anticipated, we had loads of fun. We read four books in total.
Normally we would only read Valentine’s books. However, there were not that
many on the library shelves so we decided to read books about snow since we
were expecting snow on the Monday after Reading Buddies.
We read Mouse Loves
Love by Lauren Thompson, Happy Valentine’s Day, When it starts to Snow by
Phillis Gershator, and Snow Joke by Bruce Degen.
After the first round
of reading, we did crafts. These were valentine day themed, of course! We made
crowns out of red, white, or pink paper strips. The kids decorated them with
foam and glitter hearts. They added antennas with hearts at the end. They
looked like queens and kings of hearts. There also were valentine's day
butterfly crafts. The body of the butterfly was a candy treat: either a
lollipop or a pack of smarties. The kids used heart stickers to decorate the
butterflies.
Since we still had
some more time before the end of the program, the little ones had the
opportunity to listen to more stories while they ate popcorn.
Eric
and I were the leaders of February reading buddies but it was successful
because our fellow Lucky Clovers, Mia Barnes, Sabina Mastle, Anita Justin and
Megan Justin helped out a lot. It's always great fun to work as a team and even
nicer to see the smiles and happy faces of the young attendees. We look forward
to what the March Reading Buddies has in store.
